Tesla, manufacturer of game-changing electric vehicles that are changing the automative world, is about to jump into the residential home energy market. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced in a recent conference call to investors that the company has developed a home battery storage system capable of powering an entire residential home, and that the home battery will be revealed in the next few months. Musk also announced that the Tesla home battery will begin production within six months.

Musk has always envisioned Tesla as more than simply a maker of upscale electric vehicles. He envisions Tesla as an "energy innovation company," bringing energy solutions to all areas of modern life.

Tesla Battery Power for Your Car and Home

The ability to power an entire home with battery technology alone would be a major shift in how many Americans currently get their electricity; Tesla's new battery system has the potential to be a very disruptive factor for the country's utilities. With battery technology and storage capacity improving, and production costs falling due to the rapid expansion of the electric car market, the time seems right for expanding the role of batteries from cars to homes, and eventually large-scale commercial use.

Nissan already advertises the fact that its LEAF electrical vehicle can be used as a battery backup system for the home; Tesla's goal is to make home battery use an economic alternative to traditional grid-tied power supplied by utility companies.

How Tesla's Home Battery Would Work

Tesla Home Battery

Elon Musk envisions the stationary Tesla Home Battery to resemble the battery pack that powers the Tesla S car, “Some will be like the Model S pack: something flat, 5 inches off the wall, wall-mounted, with a beautiful cover, an integrated bi-directional inverter, and plug and play.”

By combining the in-house battery pack with solar panels, the entire home could be powered without the ned for electrical energy from the grid at night. By using the power of the sun to charge the Tesla batteries, the home becomes completely electricity self-reliant, creating all of its power, and storing it, on-site.

Tesla also has plans to scale up the home battery system to power larger commercial buildings, as the image above indicates.

Just as Tesla is revolutionizing the automobile with its revolutionary electric vehicles, it seems poised to be just as revolutionary with home power. Tesla's home battery system may be just the thing needed to bring clean, local, renewable energy to the masses.
